TEJAS STORYTELLING CONFERENCE

Saturday, July 26

9:00am - 12:00 noon   Plenary Session: Gay Ducey
Title: It's About Time: Looking Closely at Our Stories
This session will look deeply and thoughtfully at story structure. We will examine the four corners that frame all tales: character, place, voice and incident. Using that view we will explore variations and approaches to deepen each of these elements. Emphasis will be on discovery and growth.
(A thirty-minute morning break will be taken at Gay Ducey's discression.)

1:00pm - 2:30pm   Workshop Session A: Jiaan Powers
Title: Just for Beginners
All the secrets you need to know if you are learning to tell stories ( or even if you are beginning to think about the possibilities). Come have fun and participate in activities. Explore tips, techniques, and tellings to improve your confidence.

1:00pm - 2:30pm   Workshop Session B: Shelly Knuepper Tucker and Anina Moore from the Texas Commission on the Arts
Panel Discussion Titled: "The Business of Storytelling"
Moderator: David Thompson
An experienced storytelling entrepreneur is joined by from the Texas Commission on the Arts to help you grow your opportunities as a story performer. Marketing yourself, managing your time and client base, as well as accessing the many resources of TCA, will be discussed. Questions welcomed and encouraged.

3:00pm - 4:30pm   Workshop Session C: Mary Ann Blue
Title: It Doesn't Have to End with Happily Ever After: Connecting Stories Across the Curriculum
Whether you're a storyteller wanting to connect your stories to the classroom curriculum or a teacher using storytelling as a teaching tool, this workshop is for you. The participants will look at how to connect with reading, language, science, math, social studies, art and music by using a story as the springboard. It all begins with a well-told tale; after that, the possibilities are limitless!

3:00pm - 4:30pm   Workshop Session D: Dorothy McMahon
Title: Enhancing Story Programs With Puppets and Props
Ideas and techniques for incorporating props and puppets to open and close programs and to introduce or help perform stories, songs, poems, riddles and finger plays. Tips for giving voice and personality to puppets will also be included.
